General Information

Maritech Ocean Ranching is an ocean enhancement firm with capital gains incentive.

The objective of this aquaculture project is to develop an economically sustainable and environmentally sound marine aquaculture activity utilizing red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) on the ocean bottom in the Point Loma kelp beds without adversely altering the environment. This is an ocean enhancement project for profit.

The company is currently complying with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and in the final stages of completing an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to lease 5.75 square miles of ocean floor adjacent to San Diego for red abalone propagation. The proposed product is a 1/4 to 1/2 pound abalone patty and live abalone for the sushi market.  Presently, no product is available.

This project’s components guarantee sustained harvests of abalone from this presently wasting potential. The repeat of abalone exhaustion with this project is virtually impossible. The accomplishment of our goal will establish a precedence that will result in this animal’s proliferation and accelerate the establishment of cultured fisheries throughout California and make this facet of the shallow water ecosystems productive.

Maritech currently has a 143 page Final Draft EIR and it is undergoing modifications and awaits approval for a public review period. Public comments regarding this project may be mailed to the Aquaculture Coordinator, California Department of Fish and Game, 350 Harbor Boulevard, Belmont, California 94002-4018. A basic description of the project is explained in the CEQA Initial Study provided in a PDF file on the tabs above.  If you wish to provide written or verbal comments we recommend reviewing the Initial Study. The EIR is significantly different and more comprehensive than the Initial Study. Click on the various tabs above for more information.
